Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo Appoints Matthias Y. Sutter as new General Manager

Shangri-La Hotels has great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Matthias Y. Sutter as General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, effective 9 September 2019.

Mr. Sutter brings two decades of experience from around the world in leading luxury properties including St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, The Peninsula Hotels and Hyatt. Prior to joining Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, he was General Manager of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa and before that General Manager at the Sheraton Seoul D Cube City Hotel, (2014) and Hotel Manager at the St. Regis Sanya Yalong Bay Resort (2011).

Mr. Sutter’s executive experience also includes task force assignments at the St. Regis Singapore, the Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho and Moxy Osaka Honmachi.

A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Mr. Sutter first studied architecture before indulging his passion for hospitality. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality at the Hotel Management School Belvoirpark Hotelfachschule Zürich and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Zürich Graduate School of Business.

A former member of the Swiss National Junior Golf team, Mr. Sutter is an active and enthusiastic triathlete. He is fluent in German, English and French.

Commenting on his appointment as General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo, Mr. Sutter said: “I am very honoured to be leading this exceptional team and welcoming guests at Shangri-La Hotel, Tokyo at such a historic time as we celebrate the ascension of Japanese Emperor Naruhito and his Ceremony of Enthronement on 22 October 2019, and then next year as Tokyo hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics.”
