Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore Cares For Nature And People

Nestled in the lush greenery of Sentosa Island and the only hotel located on Singapore’s beachfront, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore aims to be an environmentally conscious and socially aware organisation.
Care for Nature
Standing near the entrance of the resort is Singapore’s largest tree, measuring 27 metres in height and 10.2 metres in girth.  Recognised by Singapore’s National Parks Board as a heritage tree, it is believed that British soldiers planted the Angsana tree in 1885, when they settled at Fort Siloso during the pre-war period.  A tree lightning conductor has been installed to protect the old tree, trees replanted to reinstate its natural habitat, and during the resort’s large-scale renovation in 2010, efforts were made to avoid harm to the tree.  The 128-year-old tree continues to provide shade for guests along the leafy boulevard leading up to the resort’s lobby, and the resort’s gardeners carefully look after it. 

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa was converted to a non-smoking resort after its extensive renovation in 2010, and more sustainability features were added to its facilities.  A particle physics-based water management system was installed to keep the water in the swimming pools in a natural state, where only the minimum statutory amount of chlorine is added, as opposed to the four or five chemicals usually found in a commercial pool.  Due to the reduced use of chemicals, chemical reactions that cause corrosion and scale are inhibited, resulting in less need for replacement of parts and more efficient filters, which in turn conserves water and energy. 

Within the guestrooms, air conditioning cuts off when the balcony door of the room is open to avoid unnecessary consumption of energy.  As part of the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group commitment to nature, the bathroom amenities packaging in guestrooms is made of biodegradable Plastarch material, printed using soy ink, and eco-friendly cleaning chemicals are used when cleaning the resort.

The resort offers a green meeting alternative, where options to go green can be tailored to the needs and requirements of the meeting organiser.  Some options include having dried fruits in place of mints in plastic wrappers during the meeting and the use of waste friendly pencils.

Care for People
Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa has been partnering with Delta Senior School, an educational institute under Singapore’s Association for Persons with Special Needs, since 2003.  The school offers young people with mild intellectual disability educational and vocational training in key skills and disciplines required for life after graduation. 

The resort’s management and staff are regularly involved with the school’s activities in areas such as workshops, open house days and graduation ceremonies.  In addition, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa is among the first organisations to participate actively in Delta Senior School’s Work Experience Programme, which exposes students to actual work life and environment in preparation for permanent employment. 

In addition, through the resort’s annual charity golf tournament held in November 2011, the resort, together with two co-organisers, raised S$100,000 for ARC Children’s Centre, a non-profit day care centre for children with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.  On 23 November 2012, the resort successfully raised S$128,000 to the ARC Children Centre – an amount which represented a 28 per centum leap from 2011’s total donation through continuous staff dedication and team spirit.  Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore will continue to give moral support to the children at ARC through events in the centre and excursions in 2013.
