To unveil its celebrations for the festive season, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai will stage a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on 6 December 2013. Internationally renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama will design the patterns for the Christmas tree to be displayed in the lobby which will be decorated by famous fashion designer Lu Kun.
To start the ceremony, the 4.5-metre-tall Christmas tree will be lighted to signal the start of the New Year’s journey with Christmas carol by the children from Dulwich College Shanghai and Boutique School.
World-renowned as the “Avant-garde Queen”, Kusama will bring her Asia tour exhibition “A dream I dreamed” to Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA) on 15 December 2013. It will be the only stop and her first large-scale public appearance in Mainland China. Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai is greatly honored to decorate its Christmas tree using the artist’s iconic polka dots. Hotel guests are entitled to go to the exhibition for free during the exhibition period. Moreover, guests are encouraged to donate RMB198 to get one VIP entry in MoCA Shanghai. All the donations received will be designated to help the recovery of 6 children from Fudan Children’s Hospital.
The exhibition will feature the most representative pieces of Kusama as well as her work in recent years. Over 100 pieces will be put on display including paintings, sculptures, installations and documentary film footages. The exhibition will highlight huge red balloons with white polka dots entitled Dots Obsession; several Infinity Mirror Room; the 1,500 stainless steel sphere work Narcissus Garden; dotted tentacles entitled The Moment of Regeneration and the signature yellow-and-black Great Gigantic Pumpkin.
