Shanghai, China, 23 July 2013 – Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai has launched Wines, a wine bistro in an intimate and cosy setting on the second floor of the elegant River Wing. This latest addition places the tally count to 10 owned and managed food and beverage outlets within the hotel.
“The wine industry in Shanghai remains at a stage of high potential, as consumers not only demand rare and premium wines, but also crave the knowledge behind every consumption, and Shangri-La Wines aims to provide the opportunity for guests to enjoy both,” says Mr. Ulf Bremer, general manager of Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai.
Wines has 108 wines, 38 of which are available by the glass. Such an extensive selection makes the bistro unique in the premium commercial and residential district of Lujiazui.
From Wednesday to Saturday, China’s award-winning sommelier, Henry Zhou, will be present to host wine tastings and introduce six sets of unique wine flights available on the menu. Wines will offer six sets of wine flights at attractive prices, starting from Rmb68. The tasting of multiple wines allows tasters to sample the breadth and depth of a variety of wines in small portions. For many, the best way to learn about wine is to taste different types side by side. This allows one to explore the nuances and characteristics that make each wine unique – perfect for expanding one’s wine knowledge.
Sommeliers will also be on-site to hand-pick wines and share experiences, enabling guests to pick the perfect wine for gifts or personal cellars alike. Alongside the wine journey, guests are also invited to epicurean picks by Executive Chef Ulrich Jablonka, such as antipasti of cheese, charcuterie foie gras terrines and smoked seafood.
A connoisseur selection of wine glasses, decanters and openers will also be on retail at attractive prices.
Wines is a much-awaited strategic addition to the hotel, capitalising on its key competency – the resource of rare wines and exemplary wine talents.
The hotel’s master wine list currently consists of more than 450 wines and features a worldly selection of international producers representing different regions. There are offerings of Bordeaux and Burgundy from exceptional vintages. For ‘consumption in the hotel only’ are rare vertical selections of Domaine Romanee-Conti wines from nearly every cru from the vintages of 2006 to 2009, ranging in price from Rmb8,000 to more than Rmb125,000. Other special and exceptional selections include Domaine Roulot Meursault, Meo-Camuzet Gevrey-Chambertin burgundies, Chateau Petit-Figeac, Bordeaux and Chapoutier "Le Bernadine" Chateauneuf-du-Pape, all offered by the glass.
The other pillar of the success of the beverage business at Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai is its talented beverage team. David Shoemaker, director of Beverage leads the team. He is a certified sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers, International Sommelier Guild Level 2, certified specialist in wine by the Society of Wine Educators and a certified Spanish wine educator. He also possesses an advanced certificate from the Bar Smarts programme. He belongs to many industry organisations, such as Chaîne des Rôtisseures, Ordre des Côteaux de Champagne, the United States Bartenders Guild and the Guild of Sommeliers.
Through years of stringent training of the wine team at Jade on 36 Restaurant, recently named Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants by San Pellegrino, the hotel has groomed a team of outstanding sommeliers.
One exemplary example is Henry Zhou, who was brought to the limelight after winning the “Best Taster” prize in "Blind Tasting" and overall second place at the 2012 China National Sommelier Competition. He has since obtained a Level 2 standing in both the WSET and the Court of Master Sommelier certifications following merely a year of apprenticeship at the hotel’s Jade on 36 Restaurant. Zhou is currently being groomed by the Shangri-La Corporate Trainee programme, following six months of training at Shangri-La Academy in Zhuhai, China. He is currently preparing for his Level 3 WSET certification.
