Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong Is Asia's First Hotel To Introduce Electric Car For Sustainable Mobility

In September 2011, Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong launched its Nissan LEAF™, a 100% electric zero-emission car, to shuttle guests between the hotel and nearby districts on Hong Kong Island.  The initiative is the first among the hotels in Asia, and is part of Island Shangri-La’s continuing commitment to environmental improvements, as well as to raise funds for Heep Hong Society, the hotel’s Embrace beneficiary and Care for People Project.

The hotel’s Nissan LEAF™ operates from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. daily between Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong and popular local destinations including the Star Ferry pier and Airport Express Station in Central, and the Hopewell Centre and Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.  Available on a first-come, first-served basis, hotel guests can enjoy complimentary trips and donate to Heep Hong Society through a collection box located at the hotel’s lobby.  

“We’re investing in a greener lifestyle and taking the lead to inspire”, said Wolfgang Krueger, the hotel’s vice president and general manager.  “Our electric car is significant in terms of the contribution we hope to make to the environment, and to the funds raised for Heep Hong Society, which today totals HK$1.3 million since inaugurating our partnership in December 2009”.

The five-seat, five-door Nissan LEAF™ is the world’s first, purpose-built, mass-produced electric car.  The lithium-ion battery modules and a three-phase alternating current synchronous motor, generate a maximum output of 80 kilowatts and a maximum torque of 280 Newton metres, with a top speed of 140 kilometres (90 miles) per hour.  The Nissan LEAF™ has a range of around 160 kilometres (100 miles) on a full charge, and it takes approximately eight hours to recharge using 220-240 volts power supply.

Heep Hong Society is one of Hong Kong’s largest service providers of early intervention and education for children with autism, Asperger’s syndrome, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning difficulties.  The organisation has been serving the local community since 1963 and is now operating more than 30 service units throughout Hong Kong.
