Gui Hua Lou of Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai are proud winners of China’s Wine List of the Year Awards’ “Best Food and Wine Matching List” for 2014. This prestigious award was introduced in 1994 to recognise and reward the enormous investment in time, skill and resources that go into developing the best quality wine lists in any specific country.
Gui Hua Lou’s food and wine pairing menu was introduced by Pudong Shangri-La’s sommelier, Henry Zhou, in accordance with the restaurant’s revamped menu launched last month. In the meantime, Pudong Shangri-La’s Gui Hua Lou and Jade on 36 Restaurant are also proud winners of China’s Wine List of the Year’s Two Glasses Award.
The “Best Food and Wine Matching List” is a prestigious award given after consideration by the International Supreme Panel from China and around the world. It is considered one of the premier awards within the wine industry.
This award is in line with Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts’ wine philosophy as explained by Pudong Shangri-La’s general manager, Peter Clarke.

Henry Zhou is a certified level three sommelier in both the WSET and the Court of Master Sommelier. He has also won the “Best Test” prize in the blindfold test and overall second place at the 2012 China National Sommelier Competition. He started out at Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai as a corporate trainee. His ability to pair great dishes and wines has made him one of the best sommeliers in China. He now heads the hotel’s wines, where from Wednesday to Saturdays, he hosts wine tastings and introduces the six sets of unique wine flights available on the menu.
Gui Hua Lou at Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai’s new signature menu was introduced in May 2014. With 12 new signature dishes and 15 new a la carte dishes, the new menu combines the restaurant’s most popular dishes with stunning new choices. Opened in January 2006, Gui Hua Lou has been a popular choice amongst locals, and has been named “Best Chinese Restaurant” by influential media Modern Weekly, Food and Wine China, and Shanghai Tatler magazine, to name a few.
Gui Hua Lou is helmed by Executive Chef Gao Xiao Sheng, also referred to fondly by his English name, Sam. Chef Gao, who is 44 years old, has 27 years of Huaiyangnese culinary experience. He is fond of blending culinary influences with his own recipes and takes great pleasure in creating dishes with the new ingredients he discovers. Recently, Chef Gao was voted one of the “Top 50 Chefs in China” by Food & Wine China.
