Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu Unveils New Rainwater Harvesting System in Tingo Elementary School

Cebu, Philippines, September 29, 2017 – Following a fruitful eight-year partnership, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa, Cebu presented a heartwarming gift for the students of its adopted community, as it handed over a new rainwater harvesting system to Tingo Elementary School. Since 2009, Barangay Tingo, located in Olango Island, has been the resort’s beneficiary under its Embrace – Care for People project.

Led by General Manager René D. Egle, the ceremonial handover was held last September 29. It was attended by Tingo Elementary School principal Amabel Jumao-as, Tingo Barangay Captain Hon. Johnita Amorin, Engr. Ric Fornis of University of San Carlos, and representatives from the Department of Education – Division of Lapu-Lapu City.

Together with the University of San Carlos - College of Engineering, the resort’s corporate responsibility team have successfully installed seven water tanks, each of which can store up to 2,000 liters of rainwater. Apart from students and teachers, residents of the community can also benefit from the project as they utilize the stored rainwater for household needs.

“In less than six months after we had the groundbreaking, we are delighted to have the rainwater harvesting system up and running for the students of Tingo,” said Mr. Egle. “Through this project, we hope the community will have a sustainable way to support their daily requirements – and ultimately inspire the students to value the importance of water conservation and stewardship for the environment.”

The resort has initiated several successful projects for Tingo, including livelihood training, scholarship grants and medical missions. In 2016, the resort also completed construction of two school buildings that now accommodate over 100 students.
