Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu Adopts the Gilutongan Integrated School

Cebu, Philippines, November 21, 2018 – As part of the celebrations for its twenty-fifth anniversary, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu continues to strengthen its connections to the local community by adopting the Gilutongan Integrated School, located on nearby Gilutongan Island in Cordova, a 45-minute boat ride from the resort and home to nearly five hundred elementary and high school students.

Under the auspices of the Philippine Department of Education, the resort is establishing a two-year program in partnership with the University of San Carlos and the Philippine Navy. The university, tertiary institutions in Cebu, is contributing its considerable engineering resources; while the Navy will be assisting with both land-borne and sea-borne logistical requirements. The resort is especially proud to be working with country’s naval forces for the first time.

Assistance will be focused on three key areas: the construction of a three-storey classroom building for students in senior high; the improvement of sanitation and hygiene practices; and the enhancement of the water supply, a critical need given the Gilutongan community’s scarcity of potable water sources and its dependence on water purchased from the mainland.

The groundbreaking for the school building was held during the first week of November, and was attended by the mayor of Cordova, the Honorable Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho, together with Dr. Leah Apao, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent of Cebu Province representing the Department of Education; Father Roger Bag-Ao, Director of the University of San Carlos Community Extension Services; and Deputy Commander Captain Roy Vincent Trinidad of the Philippine Navy.

Other projects include the rehabilitation of the decades-old rainwater harvesting system, a task which the resort team recently completed; followed by the installation of sixteen new polyethylene tanks to maximize rainwater collection, as well as a brand-new filtration system to convert rainwater to potable water, scheduled to begin later in the month.

“We are glad to partner with the Gilutongan community,” said General Manager René D. Egle. “All children deserve to be cared for during their formative years, and our team will work hard to ensure that the students of Gilutongan Integrated School are educated in a safe and healthy environment.”
