Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu Lights Up Christmas Tree For Rural Kids

Qufu, China, 5 December 2014 – Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu will hold its second Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in the hotel lobby at 5:30 p.m. on 10 December 2014 and continue raising charity funds to support Baicun Primary School.  The event has become a platform for all the participating units and individuals to express care and love to rural kids with poor educational facilities.

After a musical presentation by the student choir from Qufu Xiaowen Music School, Christmas lights will illuminate the hotel lobby.  All proceeds from the sales of the Christmas goodies and gingerbread house will go to Baicun Primary School; buyers are entitled to “buy one, get one free dinner buffet” at Café Kong on the same night.

Ten students from Baicun Primary School will be on site to feel the loving ambiance and each will receive a dictionary or a book as a Christmas gift.

“After our one year operation in Qufu, we have made some buzz in the local community with different western cultural, such as Halloween party, Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas celebrations; those have proved to be well received by the young people.  Christmas for us means love and giving thanks to what we have been given.  We are glad to see more units and individuals participating in our event this year.  We would carry on this positive spirit and make people feel the power of love from the community,” said Jason Xu, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu.

Located 20 kilometres south-east of Qufu, Nishan town boasts of Nishan Mountain, where Confucius was born, and the Nishan Reservoir, one of the largest in China.  The place was a base during the anti-Japanese war and the locals contributed much to the birth of a new China.

Due to its remote location and poor economic foundation, Nishan town is part of the focus of Qufu’s help-out projects.  Baicun Primary School is located at the foot of a small hill.  Its students are aged 3 to 12 years old, and its total number of students and teachers is around 160.

Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu has partnered with the school since 2013.  The hotel has helped the school to renovate its playground by setting up basketball courts and a table tennis court, paint its kitchen and canteen, and install new cooking units, a kitchen ventilator, refrigerator and air conditioner.  The hotel also bought new desks and chairs for the teachers’ offices.  The hotel has also conducted several in-house campaigns for hotel staff to donate warm clothes and volunteer in some maintenance work on the school facilities.
