Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu Lights Christmas Tree for Rural Kids

Qufu, China, 6 December 2013 – Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu held its first Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony since the hotel opened in August 2013, in conjunction with Shangri-La Group Corporate Social Responsibility, at the hotel lobby at 5:30 p.m. on Friday 6 December 2013. During the event, the hotel launched its partnership with Baicun Elementary School to help improve school facilities.

Located 20 kilometres south-east of Qufu, the town of Nishan is where Nishan Mountain, where Confucius was born, and the Nishan Reservoir, one of the largest in China, are located. The place was a base during the anti-Japanese war and the people contributed much to the birth of new China. Due to its remote location and poor economic foundation, Nishan is one of the focus of Qufu’s help-out projects.

Baicun Elementary School is located on the foot of a small hill. Its students range from 3- to 12-year-olds. The total number of students and teachers are around 160. Currently, the school lacks funds for building a playground and buying sports equipment.

After the performance of the choir comprising students from Qufu XiaoWen Music School, the Christmas lights are turned on hand-in-hand by the principal of the Baicun Elementary School and the hotel’s general manager.

Total RMB8,000 donated by the hotel comprises RMB3000 raised by the hotel staff and the rest will come from the revenue received on the Christmas Eve . Through these efforts, the hotel aims to help complete the first phase of the building of the school playground. Some local companies also participated in the event and donated money to support the school.

“The ceremony marks the start of our first year Christmas celebrations with the theme of care and love,” said Jason Xu, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu. “We have made a long-term plan to support Baicun school phase by phase to improve its facilities. At this joyful time of the year, we would meet various needs from our customers for festivities; meanwhile, we would call for more attention from the community to give a hand to help the kids in rural areas to have a better living and learning environment, to do what can do to help them.”
