Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang Hosts Local Students For Sanctuary Programme

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang recently organised its inaugural interactive and educational turtle conservation programme for 80 primary school children from SJK (C) Eok Hua and SJK (C) Pai Chai.

“Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa is pleased to give back to the local community of Batu Feringgi, which we operate in, as well as Teluk Bahang, where many of our staff are from. We designed a fun and interactive Sanctuary Programme, with lots of games, recycled art and storytelling aided by simple visuals. The objective of the Sanctuary Programme is to educate the school kids, who are our future leaders. But more importantly, we hope to empower them to take action, be it now as a child, or later as an adult,” said Elizabeth Liew, the resort’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager.

The session kicked off with a simple “Getting to know PenYu”, which translates to “Getting to know your friend”, during which the facilitator, Carrol Marie Lawrence, introduced the four endangered turtle species found in Malaysia alongside other turtle facts.

The children, who were chaperoned by their teachers, were then immersed in a stimulating storytelling session, followed by an exhaustive “Turtle Telematch”, where the children simulated various stages in a turtle’s life, focusing particularly on the threats the turtles face. After making creative sand art turtles, the children were taken to the Eco Centre (located at the Rasa Sayang recreation area) for an interactive tour, and they watched a special video presentation by the Penang Department of Fisheries.

“We are also proud to have an ex-Pai Chai student, Kanageswaran Muthukaripan, better known as Kana, volunteer as one of the group leaders. Staff volunteerism for this particular programme was very encouraging – we have 16 staff volunteers over the two-day period, and many more wanting to volunteer for the same programme with SRK Teluk Bahang in October,” said Ms Liew.
