History of the Building / Milestones
Opened in 1973 by Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa was at that time the largest beach resort in the region. Located along the scenic Batu Feringgi beach, the resort is a popular landmark in Penang because of its distinctive “Minangkabau” roof architecture. It is the second hotel in the Shangri-La Group’s chain of Hotels and Resorts. Over the years, Rasa Sayang bears witness to the state’s transformation from a free port to an industrialised state and her eventual transition as an island getaway to a UNESCO heritage city. In November 2004, the resort invested RM100 million to redevelop the entire resort over the span of two years. It then reopened in September 2006 as a premier retreat providing a comprehensive resort lifestyle experience.
