Jing An Shangri-La, West
Shanghai launches its Michelin-starred Chef Series, presenting a four-day only
gastronomic event by the first guest chef personality of the year, French Chef
Laurent Peugeot (the owner of Le Charlemagne, one Michelin-starred restaurant),
at Calypso Restaurant & Lounge from 22 March 2017.
Born in Burgundy, France, Chef
Laurent was raised in a culinary culture and developed his passion for cooking
at an early age. In later years, he
started to travel around the world and was amazed by the Asian culinary culture
when he arrived in Japan 20 years ago. During
his years in Japan, the gourmet culture from the East heavily influenced Chef
Laurent’s cooking style and he creatively came up with a fusion of French
classic cuisine and Asian elements, which has earned him the “Best Young Chef
of the Year” award in 2007 by Gault & Millau and his restaurant Le
Charlemagne a Michelin star for 11 consecutive years since 2006.
“Every new travel is a new
flavour, every new exploration is a new dish,” Chef Laurent said when was asked
about the inspiration of his creations. From 22 to 25 March 2017, Chef Laurent
will take over the open kitchen at Calypso Restaurant & Lounge, bringing
food lovers in Shanghai a new gastronomic experience with innovation and excitement.

Calypso
Restaurant & Lounge
Calypso
Restaurant & Lounge offers Mediterranean food with key influences from
Spain, Italy and the south of France. Led
by new Chef de Cuisine Ranjith THILAK, Calypso’s culinary team presents an array of delights, including
authentic Napoli-style pizza and home-made gelato to diners. The restaurant only uses the freshest
selection of meat, seafood, cheeses and pastas. The dining experience within is informal, but
engaging – with its architecture, cuisine and service.
Designed
by world-famous architect Shigeru Ban, Calypso Restaurant & Lounge is
housed in an airy, two-storey glasshouse that is openly modern with detailed,
traditional touches. Its tall glass
panels retract in the warmer months for guests to enjoy alfresco dining in a
place of manicured greenery, in the heart of the city. Alfresco wining and dining is also available
on the second floor at the Terrace Lounge – for high tea in the
afternoon and morphs into entertainment central in the evening with Happy Hour,
chill acoustic tunes and faster beats as the night progresses with the in-house
DJ spinning. The restaurant is also next
to one of Shanghai’s recognised historical attractions, the former
residence of Chairman Mao Zhedong.
Chef de Cuisine, Chef THILAK, recently joined Calypso, bringing his 22 years’gourmet
experience to Shanghai. His passion for food and for culinary creation was the
drving force for him to enter the kitchen in his early ages. In 2001, Chef
THILAK joined renowned and award winning Au Petit Salut French Restaurant in
Singapore, where he worked with Patrick Hurburger, who was named the Best Chef
of the Year by W.G.S Awards. “To taste a country’s signature dishes is to
interpret that country’s history and culture. My experience in Singapore, a
city famous for its rich diversity of cuisines and culture, has inspired me to
refine French and Continental cuisine with innovated approaches.” Chef THILAK
says.
