Discover Yunnan Cuisine at Summer Palace This July

Yangon, 06 July 2017 - From 14-21 July, Summer Palace, Sule Shangri-La Yangon's signature Chinese restaurant, invites diners to explore the unique cuisine of the Yunnan region.

Yunnan is China's sixth largest province and is considered one of China's most beautiful regions. Its dramatic landscape and breath-taking views are said to have inspired the Shangri-la of James Milton's "Lost Horizon."

Yunnan borders Tibet, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos, and is one of China's most culturally diverse provinces, with as many as 26 different ethnic groups sharing the land.

With its mild climate and abundant rainfall, Yunnan is home to a large variety of plant and animal species, making the ingredients used in Yunnan cuisine very diverse.

The area's biodiversity and the many cultures thriving on it's land have come together to create a wide variety of different food traditions - a beautiful mix of many different styles of cooking and preparation styles.

Flying in from Hylandia Shangri-La are guest chefs Mu Xiaocong and Yang Tang. Owned and operated by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, the 166-room Hylandia Shangri-La opened in 2015 and was the first international full-service hotel in the city.

Chefs Mu Xiaocong and Yang Tang will lead the Summer Palace team in preparing a special a la carte menu featuring some of Yunnan's most loved dishes.

The cold section will feature two mushroom dishes, the Noodle Mushroom Salad and Black Fungus Salad, as Yunnan cooking is famous for its use of wild mushrooms which can be found in the region's dense woods.

Highlights of the Hot section include Fried dried beef with potato, Braised duck cube, Shambhala beef pie and Fried Highland barley rice with ham, among others. Not to be missed is the Fried mashed potato - a chunky yet harmonious medley of chilies, garlic and spring onions.

In addition to the region's amazing array of mushrooms, Yunnan is famous for its hams, pickles, its many kinds of flowers which are eaten in soups and stir-fries, its use of potatoes, and its love for a generous helping of spice.

The Yunnan food promotion is available for lunch and dinner from 14-21 July, with special thanks to Cathay Dragon, the official airline partner for the promotion.
