History of the Building / Milestones
Opened in 1979, the Golden Sands Resort is the fourth hotel in the Shangri-La chain. Officially launched in March 1980 by Malaysia’s third Prime Minister, the late Tun Hussein Onn. Located next to Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, the Golden Sands was also one of the first hotels along the famed tourist enclave of Batu Feringgi beach. Like its sister property next door, it is recognised as a pioneer resort. In 1988, the resort underwent an expansion to the original building to accommodate a new wing as well as an additional free-form swimming pool. An old colonial bungalow situated on the grounds of the resort that used to belong to the Sultan of Perak, was converted to a beachfront dining outlet. In May 2008, Golden Sands underwent a second major renovation lasting 18 months at a cost of approximately GBP10 million, as part of the resort’s commitment to continuously provide the best staying experience for its guests. The resort now has a more contemporary and chic design to create the ambience of a fun, modern and family-friendly resort.
