A stay in Myanmar would not be complete without a visit to Shwedagon Pagoda. The historic site, which overlooks Yangon, never fails to enchant. The shimmering main stupa soars high above the capital and is visible from miles away. Shwedagon Pagoda was built more than 2,500 years ago and is a sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar. Holy relics are believed to be enshrined within the complex.

The Royal Kandawgyi lake and nature park lies east of the Shwedagon Pagoda. The lake is surrounded by the 110-acre Kandawgyi Nature Park and Yangon Zoological Gardens, Originally developed by the British, the site consists of a zoo, aquarium and amusement park.

Along the eastern side of the lake is a glittering mythical bird called the Karaweik. This is the frontage of a floating restaurant that replicates the royal barge used by King Alongsithu of the 12th century Bagan dynasty. A cultural performance takes place every night at 6pm - 8.30pm.

Founded in 1952, the National Museum on Pyay Road is a purpose-built five-storey building set amid spacious, landscaped grounds. Ancient artworks, artefacts and historic memorabilia are shown in 14 halls. On the ground floor, displays trace the evolution of the Myanmar language, while the Lion Throne Room and Ratanapon Period pieces are not to be missed.

Formerly known as Scott's Market, this colourful bazaar is in downtown Yangon. Built in 1926, late in the British rule of Myanmar, the market was named after James George Scott, a civil servant who introduced football to Myanmar. After Burmese independence in 1948, it was renamed ‘Bogyoke Aung San Market”. Visitors will find antique, Burmese handicraft and jewellery shops, as well as art galleries and clothing stalls.
