Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao participates in Earth Hour

Qingdao, China, 18 March 2016 – Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao will actively participate in Earth Hour 2016 on Saturday, 19 March 2016.

This year’s Earth Hour theme in China is “For the Blue Life”, which focuses on the hottest topic – fog haze – and aims to call on the public to practise a sustainable way of life and consumption.  This activity is scheduled from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.  It is the hotel’s 8th consecutive year of participating in Earth Hour.

Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao’s management and staff will observe Earth Hour through several activities showing the hotel’s support of environmental protection and sustainable development.  These activities will be emphasised at the lobby area, restaurants, hotel exterior, as well as the heart of house.  At the scheduled time, all non-essential lights and electrical appliances will be switched off.

To communicate the concept of sustainable development launched by Earth Hour, the hotel will invite corporate clients and staff to pose for the “60+” formation by holding candles on the outdoor platform to symbolise “beyond one hour”.  The activity aims to attract more attention for the Earth and show the hotel’s determination of taking action for sustainable development, as well as encourage the public to practise their own small actions to wipe out the fog haze and renew the blue sky.

Participating in Earth Hour is only a small part of the hotel’s environmental efforts.  As an ISO 14001-certified hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao has implemented green programmes to identify ways to reduce wastage, eradicate practices that damage the environment and generally promote environmental awareness.

Examples of these practices include using LED lights, paperless check-in/check-out system, biodegradable cleaning materials, a special water softener to minimise water consumption, high-efficiency steam straps on the steam condensation system and water restrictors and sewage treatment facilities to prevent water pollution.
