On 6 April 2013, colleagues from various deparments at Makati Shangri-La, Manila volunteered to assist physicians of Makati Medical Center in a medical mission for the urban poor community of Moonwalk in Paranaque City.
The medical mission covered complimentary medical and dental needs of 1,217 residents, the project's biggest turnout since it started in 2011. Led by general surgeon, Dr. Michael Padlan, who is also the hotel's resident doctor, the physicians performed general surgery on 32 adults, peripheral arterial surgery on 67 adults and 142 circumcisions for children between 7 and 12 years old. A total of 235 adults and children received dental care and/or minor operations. In addition, 399 children received anti-tetanus shots; 171 more were each given Vitamin A and de-worming supplements.
The hotel volunteers assisted in making makeshift surgery rooms using linen and wooden partitions inside the San Agustin basketball courts, helping patients fill out forms and handing out medicine and vitamin supplements. They also organized a storytelling session to entertain the children waiting for their parents or for their turn to be circumcised.
The medical mission lasted all Saturday and left the hotel colleagues feeling fulfilled and joyful. Some have also expressed intention to volunteer for the next medical mission scheduled to be performed every month with doctors from Makati Medical Center.
