Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, 21 February 2014 – Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu was a double winner at the annual Tourism Malaysia Awards, taking home the “Best Restaurants Awards” for Naan – Flavours of India and Coast restaurant. The awards ceremony was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 20 February 2014.
The Tourism Malaysia Awards were designed as a tribute to deserving organisations and individuals in the travel and tourism industry who excel in the development of Malaysia’s tourism, thanks to their meritorious service standards. With more than 200 nominees contesting for 47 titles representing 12 categories, winning two awards was a tremendous honour.
The Best Restaurant award is given to an individual restaurant that contributes positively to Malaysia’s image as an attractive “Gourmet’s Paradise”. The award criteria cover the quality of food served, value for money, menu and beverage selection, the restaurant’s decor and ambience, and the creativity of promotions. The award is given based on five categories; Best Malay Restaurant, Best Chinese Restaurant, Best Indian Restaurant, Best International Restaurant and Best Ethnic Restaurant.
This is the third time that Naan – Flavours of India won the Best Indian Restaurant category award. The first time was in 2005/2006, just one year after the restaurant opened.
The delectable dishes at Naan have been carefully chosen to offer some of the best of India and to include recipes using Sabah’s famous sea produce. A part of refined northern Indian and Kashmiri classics, Naan has some Madras-style dishes, a couple of offerings from coastal Goa and an excellent Pomfret cooked Bengali style (the Bengalis are famous throughout India for their fish dishes). Although Naan is already proving to be popular with foreign visitors staying at Rasa Ria, it also caters to local residents.
A first-time winner of the Best International Restaurant, Coast restaurant captivates diners in a sub-marine dream in which huge suspended ‘jelly fish’ (fibre-optic filaments) dangle from the seven-metre ceiling above the open-sided bar and a series of light waves play gently on a massive mural of fabric and capiz shells.
With a major emphasis on freshness and quality ingredients, Coast’s menu enjoys a weekly chef’s specials highlighting delicious cuisines using only the finest ingredients prepared in a unique manner.
“Cook what you love and love what you cook,” said the restaurant’s Chef de Cuisine Alvrie Manangka. This is the philosophy behind his menu creations, which emphasise French techniques that incorporate local flavours for a modern European concept.
