SHANGRI-LA’S RASA RIA RECEIVES MICE VENUE AWARD FROM ASEAN

16 January 2020, Brunei – With continuous evolvement to drive more sustainable and a greener business model, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa was recently awarded the ASEAN MICE Venue Award (Meeting Room) at the ASEAN MICE Venue Standard held in Brunei. The award is a recognition to all the steps that the resort has taken to ensure minimal impact on the natural environment of Borneo. Spread over 400-acres including a dedicated 64-acre nature reserve, the resort has taken numerous steps to drive community engagement and champion the reduction of single-use plastics among other such endeavors.

Recognising the importance of responsible tourism and natural capital in the economy, quality of life and health, ASEAN has been leading a standardisation drive amongst its member.

The ten ASEAN member countries, namely Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, have deemed the standardisation of tourism services essential for enhancing the quality of tourism products and services, as well as promoting responsible management among tourism businesses and stakeholders in the region. ASEAN countries are home to some of the richest ecosystems that millions of tourists visit every year. This standardisation drive and the awards are valuable tools in recognising key players who can leave long-lasting positive impacts on the environment, the community and tourism.

These honours are given to MICE venues that are environmentally friendly and adopts energy conservation measures based on 55 major criteria’s of the ASEAN MICE Venue Standard. Representing the resort at the event, was General Manager of the resort Fiona Hagan said “This award is a great recognition of the efforts of Rasa Ria in driving a greener business. I believe we all have a part we can play in helping protect and preserve Borneo. This standardisation initiative is essential in ensuring that we can not only offer a great quality of service but also support responsible tourism. We are so honoured to be recognised by ASEAN and will continue to drive innovation aligned to global best practices and standards.”
