Huhhot, China, 31 May 2015 – To promote awareness of the dangers of smoking to the Qingcheng public and create a better environment for children, Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot held a “Tobacco VS Health” CSR activity on 31 May 2015, World No Tobacco Day.  On this day, pedestrians who keep their cigarettes in their pockets were rewarded with hotel-prepared products, such as healthy vegetable sandwiches and fruit juices.  The activity aims to draw everybody away from the unhealthy “chronic killer” and show more love and concern for their health and that of their families.

On this year’s World No Tobacco Day, Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot chooses the crowded sidewalk in front of the hotel to set up a display counter with a noticeable poster.  Hotel volunteers distribute prepared flyers to passers-by, explaining the harm and negative causes of tobacco.  The poster with cigarette and sandwich attracted curious pedestrians. The activity aims to make the smokers dropp their butts into the box. In exchange, they will be rewarded with either a piece of vegetable sandwich, a bottle of fruit juice or Rmb50 cash voucher from the hotel.

As early as 1 May 2011, with the implementation of State Public Health Management Regulations, Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot has actively displayed “No Smoking” signs in public areas, placed guest notices in the room, set strict non smoking rules in the guestrooms, restaurants and conference rooms and conducted related training for all staff.

The harm of tobacco is one of the serious public health problems in the world.  Smoking causes an estimated 6,000,000 deaths a year worldwide, more than the total number of deaths from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.  As the world’s largest tobacco-producing and -consuming country, the situation in China is particularly serious.  China has more than 300,000,000 smokers and 740,000,000 non-smokers suffering from the second-hand smoke.  Every year, more than 1,000,000 people die from smoking-related causes.

Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot advocates living a healthy life and staying away from cigarettes.
