Work Together to Bring Positive Impacts

At Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, we prioritize preserving local communities' way of life, traditions, and minimizing environmental impact. Our commitment to environmental sustainability guides our actions.

The Golden Touch
The Golden Touch

Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang has Crystal Family Home as its EMBRACE beneficiary. The home is a welfare organisation that accepts children from underprivileged families.

Living Clean and Healthy

To enhance the overall living conditions at the home, the resort has helped with its general cleaning and refurbishment. The activities include painting the home, installing smoke detectors and dispensers for hand soap and providing sponsored cleaning materials and supplies for floors and toilets.

Hygiene is paramount. Thus Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang has taken the initiative of conducting Typhoid Vaccination and Talks with food handlers to ensure all of the food preparation for the children is hygienic. Partners in these workshops include the resort's health contractors and the local Health Department.

Volunteerism

Staff are encouraged to volunteer their time and impart their knowledge and skills to the children. Staff volunteers have also initiated and driven their projects for the home with support and assistance from the Corporate Social Responsibility department.

Lend your support

You can support the home through donations or spending time with the children and imparting crucial life skills. For more details, please get in touch with our Corporate Social Responsibility department at (604) 888 8888.

Apart from assisting Crystal Family Home, the resort is also actively facilitating and funding the total cost of prostheses and fittings for children in dire need of artificial limbs or related devices for those from financially challenged families.

The program started in 2012, working closely with General Hospital Penang with the first case of a six-year-old patient. As of the end of 2021, we funded 128 children and young adults from the Northern region.

Nature Stewardship
Nature Stewardship

Beyond the turtle programme, our commitment extends to nature stewardship around the resort, including close collaboration with our gardeners in maintaining the Herbs and Spice Garden. Routine upkeep includes weeding, loosening soil, and adding compost, as well as keeping pathways clean, clear, and guest-friendly.

To reinforce sustainability habits, we operate a Central Recycling Centre where waste is separated into different collection streams. This makes recycling simple and visible for guests, supporting responsible resource use behind the scenes.

Biodiversity in Action
Biodiversity in Action

At Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, we advance biodiversity conservation through Shangri-La’s Care for Nature Project, partnering with the Department of Fisheries to support Turtle Care activities in Penang National Park. Regular visits to the Turtle Conservation Centre help guests and participants learn about conservation work for the Green Sea Turtle and Olive Ridley, while contributing to improved hatchling survival.

Turtle conservation is complemented by engaging interactive activities at the resort for both guests and local schoolchildren. Programmes include story-telling sessions to inspire curiosity, craft-making workshops using discarded hotel recyclables to promote circular living, and interactive learning sessions with the Department of Fisheries and environmental NGOs to deepen understanding of how actions can support wildlife and habitats.

We also actively support the International Day for Biological Diversity, embracing the global theme of living in harmony with nature and promoting sustainable biodiversity practices.
