Crystal Family Home Penang is a non-profit, voluntary welfare organisation established to assist children in need of a safe home. The home provides shelter for children who come from abused, orphaned, neglected and impoverished backgrounds, as well as those who are raised by grandparents who are no longer able to care for them.
The resort provides the home with structural maintenance, refurbishment and gives educational, health and living skills support to the children through staff training and donation drives.
Living Clean and Healthy
To enhance the overall living conditions at the home, the resort has helped with its overall cleaning and refurbishment, including the painting of the home, installation of smoke detectors and dispensers for hand soap, and providing sponsored cleaning materials and supplies for floors and toilets.
Hygiene is paramount, thus Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang has taken the initiative of conducting Typhoid Vaccination and Talks with food handlers to ensure all of the food preparation for the children is done hygienically. Partners in these workshops include the resort’s health contractors and the local Health Department.
On 14 July 2020, Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang together with sister hotels, Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Penang, JEN Penang Georgetown, Diversey and WHY LovingCare, a non-profit organisation distributed more than 900 fabric masks made out of our resort's bed linen to residents of Crystal Family Home.
Joy in Giving and Sharing
Christmas is the season of giving and love. To celebrate the spirit of the season, Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang shares Christmas joy with the children of Crystal Home.
Apart from that, the resort also provided some groceries for Crystal Home to help with daily operations.
The happiness on the faces of the recipients reminded all of how important it is to spread and share joy with others.
Over the years, the resort's work with Crystal Home has boosted the overall quality of life among the children who live there.

In line with our commitment to biodiversity conservation, the group launched Sanctuary, Shangri-La's Care for Nature Project.
At Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, we have the Turtle Care Project which aims to create awareness on turtle conservation and increase the survival rate of turtle hatching. On site, the Eco Centre is a spacious edutainment venue where resort guests and visitors have the opportunity to learn about the conservation of turtle species and environmental protection through informative displays.
Turtle conservation efforts are supported by a variety of activities that involve guests and local schoolchildren. These activities include story-telling sessions, craft-making sessions with discarded hotel recyclables and interactive learning sessions with the Department of Fisheries and environmental NGOs, including the Malaysian Nature Society and Reef Check Malaysia. Through these fun educational activities, children learn that the small actions they take contribute to making a difference on a larger scale.
