At Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, we prioritize preserving local communities' way of life, traditions, and minimizing environmental impact. Our commitment to environmental sustainability guides our actions.
Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang has Crystal Family Home as its EMBRACE beneficiary. The home is a welfare organisation that accepts children from underprivileged families.
Living Clean and Healthy
To enhance the overall living conditions at the home, the resort has helped with its general cleaning and refurbishment. The activities include painting the home, installing smoke detectors and dispensers for hand soap and providing sponsored cleaning materials and supplies for floors and toilets.
Hygiene is paramount. Thus Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang has taken the initiative of conducting Typhoid Vaccination and Talks with food handlers to ensure all of the food preparation for the children is hygienic. Partners in these workshops include the resort's health contractors and the local Health Department.
Volunteerism
Staff are encouraged to volunteer their time and impart their knowledge and skills to the children. Staff volunteers have also initiated and driven their projects for the home with support and assistance from the Corporate Social Responsibility department.
Lend your support
You can support the home through donations or spending time with the children and imparting crucial life skills. For more details, please get in touch with our Corporate Social Responsibility department at (604) 888 8888.
Apart from assisting Crystal Family Home, the resort is also actively facilitating and funding the total cost of prostheses and fittings for children in dire need of artificial limbs or related devices for those from financially challenged families.
The program started in 2012, working closely with General Hospital Penang with the first case of a six-year-old patient. As of the end of 2021, we funded 128 children and young adults from the Northern region.
In line with our commitment to biodiversity conservation, the group has Sanctuary, Shangri-La's Care for Nature Project.
At Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang, we have the Turtle Care Project, which aims to create awareness of turtle conservation and increase the survival rate of turtle hatching. On-site, the Eco Centre is a spacious edutainment venue where resort guests and visitors can learn about the conservation of turtle species and environmental protection through informative displays.
Turtle conservation efforts are supported by various activities involving guests and local schoolchildren. These activities include story-telling sessions, craft-making sessions with discarded hotel recyclables and interactive learning sessions with the Department of Fisheries and environmental NGOs. Through these fun educational activities, children learn that the small actions they take contribute to making a difference on a larger scale.
