Sustainability
Sustainability at Shangri-La The Shard, London
We are committed to shaping a more sustainable future by reducing energy use, sourcing responsibly and partnering with purpose. We are proud to hold the Forbes Travel Guide 2025 VERIFIED Responsible Hospitality badge, recognising excellence in sustainability and wellbeing.
Our Building
Our Building
Designed to be one of Europe’s most efficient tall buildings, The Shard holds a BREEAM Excellent rating and uses around 30 percent less energy than comparable towers. More than 95 percent of its construction materials were recycled, including 20 percent of its steel. The façade maximises natural light to reduce energy demand, helping us operate responsibly within this iconic London landmark.
Energy and Water Efficiency
Energy and Water Efficiency
We are dedicated to reducing energy and water use across the hotel. LED lighting, motion sensors and smart ventilation help manage consumption, while double-skin glass façades and automated blinds welcome daylight and regulate heat.

Each department has an energy champion who monitors usage, and hybrid vehicles further support low-carbon travel.

Sensor-activated taps help control water flow, and linens and towels are refreshed every third day to conserve water and energy, unless otherwise requested. These thoughtful efficiencies help us deliver a more sustainable stay.
Eliminating Single Use Plastics
Eliminating Single Use Plastics
At Shangri-La The Shard, London, we are rethinking the way we use and consume. By replacing everyday items with long-lasting alternatives, we reduce our footprint and help protect the natural world.

In our guest rooms, filtered water is served in elegant reusable glass bottles, removing the need for plastic bottles entirely. Our partnership with Jo Loves has introduced refillable bath amenities in large recyclable bottles, made from upcycled OceanBound material. This simple but meaningful action prevents more than three tonnes of single use plastic from entering global waterways each year.

Even the small details matter. Wooden key cards have replaced the plastic versions once distributed to guests, saving tens of thousands of items that would otherwise be discarded annually. Each change reflects our belief that luxury hospitality can also care deeply for the planet.
Recycling and Waste Management
Recycling and Waste Management
We proudly operate a zero-to-landfill policy. Non-recyclable waste travels by barge along the Thames to reduce road emissions, before being converted into energy for the National Grid. Glass is recycled in a closed loop, crushed and remade into new bottles, while cardboard is baled and repurposed into packaging. Each stream is managed responsibly, helping turn waste into valuable resources.
Responsible Dining
Responsible Dining
We celebrate sustainability across our dining experiences through mindful sourcing and reduced waste. Through Natoora, we champion regenerative farming and seasonal British produce, and we proudly serve free-range eggs alongside local brewers, distillers and vineyards.

Our Rooted in Nature philosophy guides our menus, highlighting responsibly sourced ingredients from MSC-certified seafood to vegan and vegetarian options, while excluding endangered species.

Food waste continues its journey through our anaerobic digestion programme, transforming into renewable biogas and fertiliser to support British farms. Through our partner, each collection also contributes to redirecting surplus food to local communities.
People and Community
People and Community
We champion a diverse and dynamic workplace where colleagues are empowered to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential. From English language lessons to mentorship programmes, our culture is shaped by opportunity and support.

This comes to life through our two-year Graduate Manager in Training programme, where future leaders rotate across key departments, gaining hands-on experience in Food & Beverage, Reception, and Housekeeping. Alongside on-the-job learning, participants receive formal training, external workshops, and guidance from senior mentors to help build confidence and leadership skills.

Our commitment extends beyond our hotel. We proudly partner with Make-A-Wish International to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses, and support Guy’s Cancer Charity through ongoing fundraising. We also collaborate with Team London Bridge on neighbourhood initiatives and work closely with Living Bankside Academy.

Together, these efforts reflect our belief in building meaningful connections and creating positive change for our people and our community.
Our Partnership with Veritree
Our Partnership with Veritree

Our partnership with Veritree allows us to take meaningful climate action beyond our walls by helping to restore natural landscapes through tree planting in Kent, United Kingdom.

Together, we are supporting nature-based solutions that rebuild ecosystems, improve soil health, enhance local biodiversity and contribute to long-term carbon reduction.

Guests are invited to add an optional £1 contribution during stays, dining experiences or meetings and events. Every contribution supports verified reforestation projects that are carefully monitored using on-the-ground data and innovative technology, ensuring transparency and a lasting positive impact. By coming together, we help regenerate vulnerable landscapes and create healthier environments for future generations.
