White-water Rafting at Kiulu River

Kiulu River is ideal for those without any rafting experience, unlike many other rivers that are suitable for advanced rafting, The river is excellently positioned in Malaysia’s beautiful village, the intimate town of Kiulu.

Mount Kinabalu

Nested in the Kinabalu National Park, the iconic Mount Kinabalu stands at 4,095 meters above sea level. Among the sought after mountains worldwide, Mount Kinabalu is among the most accessible, being just 90km away from the Kota Kinabalu City Centre, and strategically located enroute to several districts in Sabah namely Kota Marudu, Sandakan and Tambunan.

Sabah, Borneo

Snorkelling, scuba diving, beach activities, water sports and picnics by the beach are some of the activities visitors can enjoy at The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Visitors will also be delighted to know that they can try the Coral Flyer zipline experience, Malaysia’s longest island-to-island zipline, that start from Gaya to Sapi Island.

Island hopping tours can be booked on the spot at the Jesselton Point jetty terminal in Kota Kinabalu. For diving activities, it is advisable to make a prior booking with a dive operator.

Kinabatangan River

The Kinabatangan is a great wildlife and education escapism for all types of travelers and is family friendly too.

This is Malaysia’s second-longest river with a massive length of 560km from its source in the Southwest Sabah (Sandakan) to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, on the East Coast. A total of 26,000 ha (hectar) was gazetted as the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary under the State’s Wildlife Conservation Enactment of 1997.

Although an overnight trip is do-able, a minimum of three days is recommended to stay at the Kinabatangan. A longer stay will yield a better chance to spot this wildlife.

Kinabalu National Park

Kinabalu National Park boasts one of the scenic and impressive natural environments in the world. The national park provides shelter to diverse types of native flora and fauna - several hundreds of them are found only in the park. 

Rafflesia

The Rafflesia is one of the rarest and strangest flowers in the world. It is undeniably the largest you can find in the world as it weighs up to 22 pounds and the looks quite alien-like. It is actually a parasite which can be hosted by only one vine in the world. Rafflesia is only found in Sumatra, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and the Philippines. The flower smells like rotting meat near the end of its life cycle to attract flies and other insects. The flower blooms only for three to five days. The chance of seeing one blooming will require some luck and good timing.

The Rafflesia Information Centre is open daily to visitors from 8am to 3pm. Here, visitors can look forward to a jungle trekking adventure to look for the rafflesia flower. It is advisable to wear comfortable trekking shoes in the attempt to trek through the RIC’s challenging terrain.

Enjoy a phenomenal adventure of hiking experience at these popular hiking spots that you would not want to miss, be it to get into shape or simply to catch a view of the amazing sunrise or sunset. The hiking spots include Tirig Hill (Telipok), Ruhiang Hill (Tamparuli), Bonduk Hill (Sepanggar), Bonggol Hill (Kota Belud) and Maragang Hill (Kundasang)

Mari Mari Cultural Village

Experience the rich culture of the village tribes as you enter their homes and marvel at the ingenious architecture of the traditional houses.

KDCA

The cultural village is located at Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang which is about 15 minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu City. This cultural village is specially catered for the Kadazandusun tribes in Sabah and there are four (4) major Dusun tribes in Sabah in the village; Dusun Tindal Kota Belud, Dusun Papar, Rungus and Murut.

Sabah Museum

Built in 1985, the Museum complex is sited where the British North Borneo Governor’s Istana was once located. The Museum consists of the Main Building, Science and Education Centre and Heritage Village.

Inside are various Galleries housing of Natural History, Ceramics, Ethnography and Archaeology exhibits, among others.

The Heritage Village on the Museum grounds is where you can enter and experience different types of traditional houses of the various indigenous groups of Sabah. Cultural activities are held here from time to time.

Handicraft Shop, Kota Kinabalu

The handicraft market is a favorite shopping haunt for locals and tourists alike. You will be spoilt for choice with miles and miles of beautiful trinkets, sarongs and souvenirs. The market also has a wide variety of carved crafts, including exotic wooden masks, picture frames and stunning wall panels.

Tuaran Sunday Market

Tamparuli Tamu

Like most tamu (local market), this is the best place to watch the local folks mingle as they do business. Fresh produce is often on display, as well as a variety of unique delicacies such as bambangan (a sour mango-like fruit preserved in jars and often served to complement main meals) and rice wine, known as tapai or lihing. You can find just about anything here, from clothing to livestock - so it's sure to be a shopping experience like no other! It is held every Wednesday from 6am to 2pm.

Gaya Street Sunday Market

Every Sunday morning, the whole stretch of Gaya Street is closed off to traffic to make way for the street fair. A must visit market while in KK, you will be fascinated by the various items and goods sold at this fair. From arts and crafts, batik sarongs, footwear, fruits and flowers, local snacks and cakes, antiques and souvenirs, to even pets and herbs, this is the best place to experience the culture and lifestyle of the locals. The street fair starts as early as 6am and ends at 1pm.
