Sultan Abdul Samad Building
One of the most iconic buildings in Kuala Lumpur is the Sultan Abdul Samad building, a historical landmark in the city center built in the 1890s and was named after the reigning Sultan at the time. Facing the Dataran Medeka, or Independence Square, the building serves as a backdrop for many essential events for the country, including the declaration of independence of Malaysia in 31 August 1957. The building is now home to the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Culture.
Federal Territory Mosque (Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan)
The Federal Territory Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the country and designed to be a “mosque in a garden”, covering 47,000 square metres. Featuring a blend of the 16th century Ottoman Empire’s architectural design with traditional Malay craftsmanship, it is also influenced by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. Its 22 domes are glazed with decorative blue tiles and the mosque is exquisitely decorated with detailed carvings of traditional meandering cloud motives. Take a stroll outside the mosque and you will be surrounded by lush greeneries and seven water fountains filled with river pebbles.
Batu Caves
With its brightly painted steps, Batu Caves has quickly become famous as one of the most Instagrammable locations in KL. A short distance out of the city center, Batu Caves is a limestone hill that comprises a series of caves, cave temples and Hindu Shrines. Top tip – don’t take food with you, otherwise you’ll definitely be sharing with the local monkey population that frequent this popular tourist spot.
