Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya adopted the MI Nurul Huda School 1 in December 2010, along with its 146 elementary school students and 38 kindergarten students. The school is located in a rural area and is owned by the villagers. Daily operation is supported by BOS (Government Fund) and village funds but the school still needs more funding to support its operation. The students’ parents are farm and mill workers with minimum income. The school constantly struggles to provide proper facilities such as washrooms, classrooms, a canteen, library, computer lab, properly stocked clinic and fencing around the perimeter. Furthermore, there is limited water supply for the students. Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya is helping and supporting in the above mentioned areas through volunteer work and organising monthly activities to improve the school's facilities. Apart from that, we also encourage our employees to voluntarily support activities such as tree planting, handicraft making, English training and more.
Enhancing the Learning Environment
The hotel continues to work on increasing the number of classrooms as well as tiling and putting up walls and roofing. New washrooms have been been built and old washrooms have been renovated. A well-stocked library and computer lab are in the works, while a decent sized canteen is to be built in the future. All of these efforts are made with hopes of assisting children with their overall literacy and improving the school's presentation.
As part of our programme to give back to the community, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya constantly works on its Embrace project with MI Nurul Huda 1 School in Menganti-Gresik to improve the school's facilities and give full support to the students’ education. On 14 July 2012, the hotel team went to the school and commenced a tree planting project and handed out educational books donated by colleagues.
Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, in conjunction with the holy month of Ramadan, invited the students of MI Nurul Huda, Gresik, to enjoy buka puasa bersama with the hotel management team on Friday, 10 June 2016. Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, has partnered with MI Nurul Huda as part of its CSR programme and participated actively in the school’s development since 2010.
During buka puasa bersama, students from grades 3 to 5 danced and read passages from the Al-Quran.
“This buka puasa bersama will be an annual event. It is great that students from MI Nurul Huda can come to our hotel and break their fast here,” said Martin Brenner, General Manager of the Hotel.
Some of the students were mesmerised when they stepped into the hotel.
“It’s very beautiful here. The food is also nice. I like it here,” said Akbar, a 3rd grader from Nurul Huda.
The event finished at 7pm. Every child received a goodie bag to encourage them in their religious activities, and a group picture was taken.
