Recently, Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort
& Spa, Hainan’s executive committee (ExCom) and staff volunteers gathered
together at the resort’s boot camp at 5 p.m. for the launch of its composting
station.
As a resort, Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort &
Spa, Hainan has a lot of advantages in building this composting station – a massive
grassy area, leaves from the garden, egg shells from the kitchen, loam from
Shang Garden, a great location to store the composting boxes and the willingness
of its colleagues to preserve the environment.
Composting is a way to turn organic waste into
organic fertiliser, which would not only benefit society and the environment,
but also provide nutrient-rich fertiliser at low cost.
Firstly,
colleagues from engineering explained to the volunteers how the composting box
works and what needs to be done. Afterwards,
the ExCom members and volunteers began to work, wearing the gloves and masks
prepared by the Engineering Department. The
first step was to break down all the materials. The second step was to mix them together and
then adjust the water. The volunteers then mixed the materials well and placed them into the
compost boxes for the biological process. The composted manure is expected to be ready
for use in 15 days.
