The BREW at Kerry Hotel Pudong Scoops A Series of International Medals

The brewing team behind The BREW, Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai’s craft brewery, made an exceptional showing by winning a series of accolades for its handcrafted beers at several international beer competitions held recently.

The list of competitions and medals won are:

  • Beerfest Asia 2013: Gold Medal for Skinny Green; Silver Medal for Pils and Bronze Medal for Mash Citra IPA. It is three years in a row that the handcrafted beers at The BREW have received awards in this competition
  • Japan Asia Beer Cup 2013: Gold Medals for Pils and Indian Pale Ale
  • Australian International Beer Awards 2013: Bronze Medal for Pils

The fourth annual Beerfest Asia was hosted in Singapore and supported by the UK’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling and the Brewers Association of America.  Over 400 beers were judged this year.

Japan Asia Beer Cup was founded in 1998 and is organized by The Craft Beer Association.  This year, over 350 beers participated in the competition.

The Australian International Beer Awards is an annual brewing competition that commenced in 1987.  It is now the second largest competition of its kind in the world, with 1,490 entries by 277 brewers from 35 countries this year.

These competitions were all judged by a panel comprising the world’s leading certified brew masters and beer experts.

The BREW’s brewing team, led by Kerry Hotel, Pudong, Shanghai resident brew master Leon Mickelson won against competitors from across Asia and all over the world.

Leon Mickelson is certified by the UK’s Institute of Brewing and Distilling and has been brewing for almost 17 years.  His relentless attention to detail while using time-honoured brewing methods, combined with his passion for quality beer and cider, ignites his performance as a brew master. 

As a founding member of the China Craft Brewers Association, Leon has been invited to judge in a few international awards, including the mentioned three major events and the World Beer Cup 2014.   The World Beer Cup is considered the largest international commercial beer competition.  The tenth biennial competition will be held in Denver, Colorado, USA in April 2014.

A craft brewery with its own signature beers created by the resident brew master, a first for a hotel in Shanghai, The BREW is a lively, contemporary bar with pub-style favorite dishes and live music entertainment, providing both indoor and outdoor seating.  Beer connoisseurs or novices may enjoy lunch at The BREW or unwind after a hard day’s work, listen to live music entertainment, watch sports television broadcasts or simply relax in the outdoor tent, while taking in views of Century Park.  Six handcrafted beers and one cider represent the tip of a vast selection of beverages on offer.
