Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou Supported Earth Hour

Demonstrating its commitment to protect the environment and mitigate climate change, Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou participated for the fifth consecutive year in Earth Hour, a global Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) climate change initiative.

On 29 March 2014, before the events, hotel together with residents guests made a big “60+” logo of Earth Hour on the hotel building by guest rooms’ light. It was to call all the Baotou people take part in the activity to turn off the light for one hour. Between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m., Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou turned off its lights in most back-of-the-house areas and dim the lights in public areas, restaurants and the hotel exterior.  Guests were encouraged to participate by turning off the lights in their guestrooms, using linen napkins instead of paper napkins, and taking leftover food home to reduce food wastage. 

Beyond dimming the lights, hotel called guests and employees to engage to the theme Earth Hour activity of this year to improve the smog weather in China. Guests could write down a action of it on the “Commitment Wall” in the hotel lobby. The Lobby Lounge prepared a special “Blue Sky” cocktail for the guests. Hotel also made campaigns on hotel weibo and Wechat to call hotel fans to join the activity.

Participating in Earth Hour is only one small part of Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou’s environmental protection efforts. Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou strives to provide guests comfort while protecting and caring for the environment. This includes regular green activities and energy-saving and emission-reducing projects.  In December 2011, the hotel announced that it would cease serving shark fin in its restaurants and would no longer accept new orders for shark fin products in banqueting.  As a certified ISO 14001 hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou puts all effort into energy efficiency compliance. Aside from this, the hotel uses biodegradable and compostable plastarch material, which degrades by around 70 per cent in 80 days, for all toiletry packaging. Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou launched a paperless registration service on 11 April 2013. This environmentally friendly service saves about 300,000 pieces of paper.
