Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen Observes Earth Day with 12 Green Initiatives

On 21 and 22 April 2013, management and staff of Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen embarked on 12 acts of green to commemorate Earth Day. This collective effort was aimed to spread the message of adopting environmentally friendly practices in our daily lives, amongst colleagues and the local community.

“Everybody knows that they can take greener strides for bluer skies . However, they may not know where to begin,” said Nicholas Smith, Resident Manager at Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen “I hope that with our 12 acts of green, we will bring some practical tips and influence our community topreserve the environment.”

Pedal Power

In a tribute to the icon of China’s culture in the 1980’s, the hotel purchased 12 bicycles that were used in the hotel’s series of environment friendly activities. The bicycles served as a carbon-free mode of transportation and in several other innovatively meaningful ways.

To kick start the series of events on Earth Day, 12 staff cycled approximately 20 kilometers to work from their dormitory. The mechanical power of the pedal was applied in a creative manner as two bicycles were used to operate blenders to make smoothies. The pedal powered smoothies are available to the public at the hotel lobby and Kerry Plaza.

The activities for the day were culminated in a Carbon Neutral Cocktail Party where guests were invited to take an Earth Day pledge to practice green habits. The main highlight of the party was the use of power generated by cycling a bicycle to light up an Earth Day inspired floral centerpiece. Designed to honour Earth day, the centerpiece featured mostly recycled materials such as magazine pages, shampoo bottles and drink cans.

Public Activities

As part of the series of activities, 50 participants from the hotelcombed and cleaned the beach at Shenzhen Bay at on 21 April, 2013 starting from 8:30a.m. To raise awareness on the importance of recycling, hotel staff gave away one-of-a-kind hand-painted reusable bags to the public.

In-hotel Activities

Energy savings were made by switching off non-essential lighting, including the façade lighting and dimming interior lights. Guests were also invited to participate by turning off the lights in their guestrooms and unplugging electronics that were not in use.

The seeds of a herb garden were sowed as the staff prepared the soil beds and planted a herb garden in the hotel. To lower the carbon footprint of meals served, the staff cafeteria prepared only vegetarian meals during the day. Hotel staff were encouraged to commit to green practices in their daily lives for a year by signing on a pledge wall.
