Background Briefing: Shangri-La In China

Asia Pacific’s leading luxury hotel group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, has been committed to growth in mainland China since it opened its first hotel there in 1984.  Today, Shangri-La has more than 20,000 of its over 40,000 rooms and 46 of its 97 properties in mainland China, reflecting the growing demand of domestic and international travel.

Following the debut of Shangri-La Hotel, Hangzhou, its first hotel in mainland China, the company opened three hotels in Beijing from 1986 to 1990.  Dramatic expansion occurred in the latter half of the 1990s, when Shangri-La opened nine hotels in mainland China from 1996 to 1999 (see the following chart).  Shangri-La’s growth in China has closely followed the country’s economic development, with many of the group’s properties built in or near China’s designated economic development zones, such as Shenzhen, Pudong, Qingdao and Dalian.  Being the largest luxury hotel group in mainland China, Shangri-La will continue to expand the number of properties that it owns and operates in China and is targeting key secondary and third tier cities for new hotels.

“China is one of the world’s fastest growing and most important economies.  With a population of more than 1.3 billion, China has enormous potential for domestic tourism in addition to ever-increasing inbound business and leisure travel.  We will continue to strengthen our position and take a leading role in the growth of China’s hospitality industry,” said Shangri-La President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Dogan.

To that end, the Shangri-La Academy, Shangri-La’s centralised training centre, opened in December 2004.  The goal of the Academy is to speed up and intensify employee development in pace with the group’s rapid growth in China.  In August 2005, the Academy opened its door to public enrolment.
