Xian, once the capital of China, is today the capital of Shaanxi province. The cultural and historical significance of the area, as well as an abundance of relics and sites, have earned Xian the title of "Natural History Museum".

Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of interior China, Xian has become an important cultural, industrial and educational centre.
