Shangri-La Hotel, Shenzhen, has cooperated with the Shenzhen Autism Society's RenAi Rehabilitation Center since 2012 to carry out the Caring for Autistic Children programme. The project focuses on providing long-term training on biscuit-making for the centre’s autistic children and teachers, and supporting its annual charity sale during the Christmas season.
Since 2009, Shangri-la Hotel, Shenzhen, has worked with Shenzhen Yuan Ping Special Education School to provide the school’s children with basic skills training, including basic training on manners in English, Western and Chinese service skills, pastry making, Chinese dim sum making, laundry skills, ikebana, bed making, core practices and more. In addition, the hotel has provided internship and employment opportunities for the students. To date, the hotel has employed five students with different disabilities from Yuan Ping Special Education School as permanent colleagues following their internships.
Dream Baking Room Project
In 2015, the hotel donated the proceeds from the sale of Christmas stars to the Shenzhen Autism Society's RenAi Rehabilitation Center to build a Dream Baking Room for the children. In 2016, Ms. Rebecca Yan, the hotel’s resident manager was invited to attend the opening ceremony of Dream Baking Room.
Later, pastry chefs from the hotel started conducting monthly training for autistic children at the Dream Baking Room, teaching them to make muffins, egg tarts, cookies and more. Then, the hotel held a charity sale to sell the treats made by the children during the CSR activities. On 2 December 2016, the hotel held a charity sale to sell painted postcards by the children, and all proceeds were used to support the centre in further developing the Dream Baking Room. Not only did these efforts benefit the centre and the children financially, but they also boosted the children's self-confidence by helping them to understand that their artistic talents were appreciated and admired.
