Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, adopted a local primary school, Kaiduan Papar Primary School, that is a 1-hour drive from the resort in January 2023 as part of the Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts’ Sustainability programme, Embrace.

The one hundred twenty seven children attending the school come from impoverished families living in villages around the school. Most children walk to school and leave as early as 5am to make it in time for school.

During the five-year programme, the Resort will enhance some physical structures to provide a safe environment for its pupils and will add some essentials to existing facilities. Some key areas that require special attention include:

• Installing water filters to provide clean water supply for pupils and teachers' consumption,
• Installing genset as back up power supply,
• To build a dining area/open hall, and
• Upgrading of classrooms (library, science lab and computer lab) with projectors, sound systems and LCD screens to help the pupils learn necessary skills.
