Our ESG Vision
At Shangri-La, we aim to be the best-loved hospitality group by hosting people to the colourful joys of life in a sustainable manner, delivering hospitality that empowers our people, uplifts local communities, nurtures the planet, and celebrates Asian heritage.

Our ESG Strategy
Our ‘Triple S’ strategy of Stay, Savour and Shine ensures that sustainability is embedded into every aspect of our business and operations, touching every step of your journey with us.

STAY
STAY

At Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, we believe true luxury means living in harmony with nature. Our resort integrates sustainable practices into every guest experience, reducing environmental impact while preserving the beauty of Sabah.

To cut single-use plastics, we invested over MYR 200,000 in our own water bottling plant, eliminating more than 450,000 plastic bottles each year. Guests also enjoy refillable bath amenities, recyclable canvas bags, paper straws in dining outlets, and compostable takeaway packaging.

Smart design ensures every stay is efficient and comfortable. Rooms feature thermostat controls that shut off air conditioning when balcony doors are open, dual flush systems, water restrictors, and wooden key cards supported by energy-saving automation. Across the resort, solar lighting, energy-efficient bulbs, biodegradable laundry chemicals, and compressed natural gas fuel further reduce our footprint.

Together with our suppliers and guests, we are shaping a resort experience that is thoughtful, responsible, and truly sustainable.

SAVOUR
SAVOUR

From Garden to Glass
At Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, sustainability is an essential ingredient in everything we create. Since January 2024, our on-site herb, fruit, and edible flower garden has been supplying all resort dining outlets with freshly harvested produce. This initiative reduces transport emissions, lessens reliance on external suppliers, and provides guests with authentic, farm-to-table flavours. It also serves as a living example of urban agriculture, raising awareness among colleagues and guests alike.

Rooted in Nature
Our culinary philosophy is guided by the Rooted in Nature initiative sourcing fresh, seasonal, and sustainably produced ingredients from trusted local farmers and suppliers. By bringing the best of Sabah’s produce to our tables, we not only celebrate local flavours but also support community livelihoods and reduce our environmental footprint.

Reducing Food Waste
We are equally committed to mindful consumption. Through careful meal planning, tracking of kitchen waste, and composting, our chefs minimise excess and ensure that every ingredient is used to its fullest potential.

Every garnish, every sip, and every dish is thoughtfully prepared to delight our guests while caring for the planet.

SHINE
SHINE

At Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, sustainability is more than a practice, it’s part of our culture. We believe in creating a positive impact that uplifts communities while protecting the environment, ensuring that both people and planet can thrive together.

Through our Embrace programme, we have adopted two schools, SK Kitobu, Inanam and SK Kaiduan, Papar for a five-year partnership. The resort supports these schools by enhancing physical structures to provide safer environments for pupils, improve essential facilities and create more opportunities for learning and growth through various activities. Our colleagues also dedicate time to volunteerism, from gotong-royong clean-ups to educational initiatives, ensuring that meaningful connections are built with the communities we serve.

At the same time, our Sanctuary programme reflects our deep commitment to environmental protection. We have initiated a marine conservation project to assist with the preservation and protection of the Tunku Abdul Marine Park, and help save fish species such as the clownfish.

Through regular dialogue sessions with our General Manager and leaders, colleagues are encouraged to share feedback and ideas. This spirit of openness and collaboration has established us as a leader in corporate environmental programmes in Sabah.
