“Veitaqomaki” means ‘protect’ or ‘guard’ in the local Fijian language. Shangri-La Yanuca Island,Fiji has embraced this in their guardianship and assistance of their Embrace project beneficiary schools including Cuvu District School, Nadroumai District School and the Sigatoka Special School. The resort is closely linked to the community of Cuvu as, for generations, the members of this community have grown up with the development of tourism through the hotel and throughout the Coral Coast region.
The resort works to improve the school’s facilities and as well as complement existing educational programmes through outreach programmes focusing on marine conservation and activities related to the Shangri-La Marine Education Centre.
The important aspect of visits to the Shangri-La Marine Education Centre (SMEC) is that the children remain inspired and engaged with what they have learnt. Their visit to SMEC includes a tour of the exhibits, focusing on the relationship between terrestrial and marine environments and how human activities on land impact the ecology of the ocean.

- Our resort was recently presented with the Sustainability award during the 2014 AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards in Fiji. The award was given in recognition of the resorts outstanding contribution to community and the environment and Marine Manager, Ms Mereoni Mataika received the award on behalf of the resort.
- The resort plans will continue its include Fire, Life and Safety programme later this year and will conduct training for fire wardens in its Embrace schools. Work on Fire, Life and Safety awareness commenced in 2013 in the resorts three Embrace schools.
