Nandi Hills
Nandidurg is a hill fortress in southern India, in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state. It is located just 10km from Chickballapur town and 60 km from Bangalore. It is 4849 feet (1,478 m) above sea level. Nandidurg Hill, known commonly as Nandi Hills, is the source of the Penna, Ponnaiyar and Palar rivers. Nandi Hills gets its name from an ancient temple on this site. The temple houses a thousand-year-old sculpture of Nandi, the bull on which Lord Shiva rides.
Founded in 1970, Bannerghatta National Park is home to diverse species of animals including crocodiles, tigers, lions and 20 different species of butterfly. Tourists can arrange safari trips to explore the area of more than 100 square kilometres. The park is a natural habitat to elephants, leopards, jackals, foxes, gaurs (Indian bison), barking deer, sloth bears, spotted deer and hares. There is also a snake farm, which is popular among visitors.
Cubbon Park
Cubbon Park is one of the city’s important heritage sites, renowned for historical events, cultural institutions and government buildings. The symmetrically shaped park covers an area of 300 acres, which is adorned with countless flowers, shaded groves and trees. Cubbon Park was created under Richard Sankey in 1870. It was named in honour of Lieutenant Mark Cubbon, a British army officer of the East India Company and British Commissioner of Mysore. In the centre of Cubbon Park is the Memorial of Seshadari Iyer, the Dewan of Mysore, which houses the Public Library. There is also a statue of Queen Victoria. The park is home to indigenous and exotic species about 68 genera and 96 species with a total of around 6000 plants and trees.
Lal Bagh Gardens
The Botanical Gardens are a main attraction of Bangalore. Construction of Lal Bagh began in 1760 under Hyder Ali’s rule. His successor, Tipu Sultan, completed them.
Located in southern Bangalore, the gardens cover 240 acres and are designed in the Mughal style. Lal Bagh is full of rare species of trees, plants and other flora from around the world. In the grounds there is also the pre-historical Lal Bagh Rock, estimated to be 3,000 million years old.
