Mid-Autumn Festival At Shang Palace

Designed with elegant touches of the Far Eastern culture, Turkey's first Asian hotel Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul invites you into the world of Asia's epic tales. The country's most authentic Chinese restaurant Shang Palace, takes you to the distant lands with a delicious menu on September 8, Monday evening when the day of the full moon rises.

In a land of magical myths, dragons and mysterious tales, the “MOON” has a distinct and divine place in China. As the tale goes; a man highly reputed with his archery, named Hou Yi lived in a place and time where emperors ruled over the Gods.Hou Yi also had a wife with a legendary beauty named Chang-O. One morning ten suns magically appeared in the sky. This made the land very hot, and the folk were concerned it would cause a massive drought and all would die. The emperor instructed Hou Yi to shoot down nine of the ten suns. He did so and his superb marksmanship was rewarded with the elixir of Life. Concerned that Hou Yi would become a tyrannical ruler, Chang-O stole the elixir. After drinking it, she floated up to the moon, where she still lives to this day. As the Goddess of the Moon, it is believed that every September when the full moon rises, Chang-O appears dancing showing her longing for China.

Hence in China, the Mid – Autumn Festival is organized for celebrating the dancing Goddess and the moon. In this festival as the full moon rises, families get together; they watch the gleaming moon rise, eat moon cakes and sing moon poems. Looking up to the sky and seeing the full moon, you just might see her dancing and some even believe that she is to be seen on the moon.

With its extraordinary atmosphere and menu at Shang Palace not only will you meet an ancient tradition, but also discover exotic dishes that you have never tasted before accompanied by one of the significant symbols of the festival, “Moon Cake”.

Lastly, three Moon Cakes fell from the moon; one for Shang Palace, one for our guests, and one for the Goddess, who started this festival…
