For stays of less than 90 days, a visa is not required for most travellers from Commonwealth countries, the European Union and North America. Travellers holding travel documents issued by certain other countries may require a visa to enter Singapore.

The unit of currency is the Singapore Dollar (SGD). It is divided into 100 cents, and is available in notes of 10,000, 1,000, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 2. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign ($).

Credit cards are accepted in major hotels as well as shopping malls. Cash and travellers cheques can be exchanged in licensed currency exchange offices and international hotels.

Hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge and 7% government tax to the bill, unless otherwise stated.


Generally, there is a 10% service charge added to the bill. If this charge is not included, then you may tip the waiter 10% or whatever you feel is appropriate.

Tipping taxi drivers is not customary, and it is, in fact, discouraged.

Public Health

Medical facilities in Singapore are of a high standard. Tap water is potable. Traders Hotel, Singapore, will provide a complimentary bottle of water in every room.


Given Singapore's tropical climate, lightweight summer clothing is generally sufficient. A suit is appropriate when conducting business.

Some restaurants may require a jacket, otherwise smart, casual clothing will suffice.
