On the educational front, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore has incorporated three training programmes for MINDS’ special education curriculum: weekly healthy cooking classes, housekeeping classes within a mock guestroom in the school and work attachment at the hotel every Tuesday. Recreational activities with MINDS clients include Beach Day Clean–up, a thrilling excursion to Universal Studios Singapore, nature trek through Chek Jawa Wetlands in Pulau Ubin, Children’s Day Party, and more.
Work Experience Opportunities
In October 2011, the Garden Wing closed for renovation. Instead of disposing the old furniture, two MINDS schools turned one of their classrooms into a replica of the famed Shangri-La Garden Wing guestroom. Each “guestroom” was fitted with Garden Wing’s furnishing, Housekeeping service trolleys and appliances to train the students in housekeeping skills for employment opportunities and for their own personal upkeep.
Every Tuesday, a group of senior students from a MINDS school come to the hotel for actual on-the-job training. Supervisors from the Housekeeping department take the students under their wings so that they can acquire hands on job experience in a proper hotel environment. Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore has employed four graduates from this programme as full-time employees. Other graduates have taken on full-time jobs in other hotels as well.
On Tuesday, 2 October 2012, 200 MINDS clients from schools and training development centres were entertained by a giant Angry Bird mascot, magic tricks, balloon twisting, face painting, and scrumptious food catered by the hotel in celebration of Children’s Day. The celebration turned into a massive dance party as MINDS clients took to the stage while grooving to the latest K-Pop hits, especially the hugely popular Oppa Gangnam Style.
