Situated in south-central Guangdong Province, Shenzhen is part of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and is one of China's wealthiest cities.

Home to a stock exchange, many banking and financial institutions and high-technology manufacturing companies, the city also boasts many tourist attractions such as beaches and theme parks.


All international travellers require visas although Brunei, Japan, and Singapore passport holders are able to enjoy access without visa to China for up to 14 days.

Standard 30-day, single-entry visas can be issued in three to five working days from Chinese embassies, and must be used within three months of the date of issue. Longer visas are often more difficult to obtain.

The Chinese currency is known as renminbi (RMB). Credit cards are accepted in major hotels as well as shopping malls.

Public Health

Dress is generally informal in Shenzhen except on social, diplomatic or government occasions when a suit and tie is appropriate.

Lightweight clothing is appropriate for spring and summer months. A sweater or a pullover is recommended during autumn and thicker jacket during winter.


Shenzhen has a subtropical climate with long summers and short winters. Frequent rainfall and occasional typhoons occur from August to October.
