Quick Facts

Get up to speed about the region

Shenyang is the political, economic and cultural centre of Liaoning Province, and the largest city in Northeast China. It is also an important industrial base and a famous historical city. As the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, it has one of the country's two surviving imperial palaces.

Shenyang's climate is relatively dry most of the year with spikes in precipitation during the summer, due to the influence of monsoons. Temperatures vary as much as 10℃ from day to night. In the winter they can drop below freezing, so the smart traveller will plan to dress in layers.

Shangri-La Hotel, Shenyang is in Shenhe District, the city's economic, financial and commercial centre.

Visas

All international travellers require visas.

Brunei, Japan and Singapore passport holders can enjoy visa-free access to China for up to 15 days.

Standard 30-day, single-entry visas can be issued in three to five working days from most Chinese embassies, and must be used within three months of the date of issue.

Longer visas are often more difficult to obtain.

For further details, consult with your travel agent, China International Travel Service, China Travel Service, or any Chinese embassy or consulate.

We do not recommend drinking water from the tap. Complimentary bottled drinking water is available in every hotel room.

Dress

Dress is generally informal in Shenyang except on social, diplomatic or government occasions when a suit and tie is appropriate.

Winter requires heavy clothing, including coats, hats, and gloves as temperatures can drop below freezing with strong winds and snow. Light clothing is appropriate for the spring and summer.

Weather

Shenyang’s climate is described as “continental monsoon”, which means it is a city of extremes. The weather varies dramatically from one season to the next: Hot humid summer temperatures can soar above 32°C, whilst bleak and very dry winters can see temperatures plummeting to between -20°C and -30°C.
