Visitors to Sanya can also fly into Haikou, the capital of Hainan, and transfer by express train from there. Guests can choose to hire a car, or take taxis and public buses to travel around the city.
Taxis are the most convenient way to travel around Sanya. For long distances, it’s common practice to bargain for the taxi fare. However, within the downtown area, taxis are metered with fares starting from RMB 10.
- From Meilan Station (Haikou Airport), it’s a 90-minute journey to Sanya by the Haikou-Sanya express train.
- The Guangdong-Hainan Railway is China’s first trans-sea railway. Travellers can choose between three types of ticket: hard seat, hard sleeper and soft sleeper. Sanya is 15 hours by train from Guangzhou, 35 hours from Beijing and 36 hours from Shanghai.

The network of city buses extends to all major districts in Sanya. Bus fare within the downtown area costs RMB 2. For out-of-town services, fares usually start at RMB 10.
