Rasa Ria's Ecofelt Growbag

Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu, is poised to captivate guests with a unique and sustainable Christmas tree in our Lobby for the 2023 holiday season. This eco-friendly masterpiece, crafted from 700 spider plants in felt grow bags, reflects the resort's commitment to environmental responsibility, with the bags made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

Complementing the display is a plant fiber saucer, 100% biodegradable and crafted from recycled bamboo fiber, showcasing the fusion of sustainability and functionality.

Adding an artistic touch to the initiative is Jo Luping, designer of the Ecofelt Growbag. Made from upcycled plastic bottles, the grow bag features motifs symbolizing the distinct aspects of The Rasa Ria Reserve. Jo Luping, a Sabahan of mixed Kadazan/New Zealand descent, creates contemporary pieces in various mediums, capturing treasured memories from both her Borneo-New Zealand identity.

Guests at Shangri-La Rasa Ria can purchase potted spider plants at RM98 or the Ecofelt Growbag alone at RM88. Proceeds benefit local organizations, including MAMA Jarum in Tamparuli, empowering mothers with new sewing machines, Jireh Homes in Tuaran for orphanage groceries, and the Society of the Blind Tuaran, supporting the visually impaired.

Shangri-La Rasa Ria's 2023 Christmas tree not only lights up the lobby but radiates the spirit of giving, weaving a tapestry of sustainability, community engagement, and compassion.

Eco-Friendly Christmas Deco
Eco-Friendly Christmas Deco

As the holiday season approaches, Shangri-La Rasa Ria is set to redefine festive celebrations with a unique collaboration with local innovator Upcycled Shack. Together, they are introducing eco-friendly Christmas decorations crafted from repurposed corn husks, breathing life into discarded materials and fostering sustainability in every festive corner of the resort.

This partnership extends beyond mere aesthetics; it's a symphony of empowerment for over 20 local artisan women from Kota Marudu. Through this collaboration, these talented individuals are provided with opportunities for upskilling, showcasing their craftsmanship, and contributing to household incomes. The initiative transcends festive adornments, becoming a beacon of positive change within the community.

Sourced from agricultural crops, the materials used in these decorations are coloured with natural elements such as turmeric and pandan leaves, embodying the resort's commitment to sustainability. Each ornament and centrepiece is a zero-waste marvel, contributing to a healthier environment and a more responsible approach to holiday festivities.

Curated by Upcycled Shack, this collaborative effort involves various communities and social enterprises from Sabah, including Dumo Wongi, PACOS TRUST, Happly Plastic, Corn Husk Craft, and Wagas De Asi. This collective endeavour not only enhances the uniqueness of the decorations but also symbolizes the strength of community collaboration in achieving sustainable goals.

Aligned with Shangri-La's dedication to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, this festive initiative is more than a seasonal gesture. It's a tangible step towards a responsible and eco-conscious hospitality future, inviting guests to enjoy not just the festive charm but also to be a part of positive transformation and sustainability.

Rasa Ria’s Sarimpak Robe
Rasa Ria’s Sarimpak Robe

At Rasa Ria, we proudly promote sustainability and support the Tuaran community through our 'Do Good' initiative. Explore our latest robes for Ocean Wing guests, benefiting adults and children.

The idea came about towards the end of the pandemic in 2022 in our effort to do more for the local Tuaran community to have a sustainable income leveraging on their skillsets and boosting the cultural heritage, supplementing their income and uplifting the community.

With the help from Changgih Designs to recruit the artisans for the Rasa Ria robes, we worked with 8 artisan mothers from Tuaran. The project took an accumulative 1519 fair wage hours to complete from selecting the fabrics to handcrafting the designs and right to the tailoring, all created exclusively for Rasa Ria.

The design on the robes is uniquely local, inspired by the Sarimpak, an iconic ornament worn by the Bajau Samah people of Sabah as part of their ceremonial costume. The Sarimpak fabric design, traditionally crafted by the skilled hands of artisan mothers, showcases their incredible talent and cultural heritage. The headgear is formally worn by the Bajau bride-to-be for weddings, shaped like the horns of a water buffalo.

Rasa Ria Reserve
Rasa Ria Reserve

Rasa Ria Reserve, a 64-acre jungle between rivers and the South China Sea, offers unobstructed views of UNESCO-listed Mount Kinabalu, serving as a gateway to Borneo's lush landscapes for hotel guests.

The Rasa Ria Reserve is divided into two distinctive zones - Nature Reserve and Adventure Point. The dedicated 64-acre nature is home to numerous plants and animals endemic to Borneo while the Adventure Zone is an experiential play space that recreates animal species along with experiential pieces like a climbing wall to encourage the development of body and mind through immersive experiences.

At the heart of the Rasa Ria Reserve is a Discovery Centre that educates through tactical exhibitions. The Resident Naturalist nurtures the reserve with the maintenance of the natural surroundings to ensure that fauna and flora continue to thrive. They also offer an opportunity to witness these endemic species through guided walking trails.

The Rasa Ria Reserve was established by Shangri-La Rasa Ria in collaboration with the State Wildlife Department of Sabah in June 1996. The primary purpose of setting up this protected ecological space was to help facilitate rehabilitation programmes for endangered species of fauna endemic to Sabah. The reserve’s focus on rescue and rehabilitation work, as well as education and awareness programmes over the next 20 years after its establishment, saw a marked reduction in the number of orangutans sent to the reserve for care.

The Orangutan Rehabilitation Project concluded successfully in 2016, with all orangutans now residing at the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Sandakan. The reserve then refocused its energy on providing the best possible environment for the remaining flora and fauna that have come to call the reserve their home.

The Rasa Ria Reserve is home to over 80 bird species that grace lush landscapes and gardens with vibrant colours and melodious calls. Immerse yourself in the beauty of nature through solo or group bird-watching experiences. As part of our commitment to biodiversity, the reserve is also home to Stingless Bee. Discover the world of these remarkable creatures through our immersive activities. Learn about their anatomy, life cycle, and diet. Get up close with a live colony, take a farm tour, sample raw honey, and learn how to harvest it. It's a hands-on experience for those interested in these amazing creatures and their honey.
