Traders Hotel, Manila is on its 6th year of continuously supporting the Maytubig Daycare Center as part of the Embrace program under Shangri-La’s Care for People project.
In 2008, Traders Hotel, Manila began working with Barangay Maytubig, a neighboring local community and assessed their needs for the Maytubig Daycare Center. The day care was primarily run by the community government officials in tandem with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). From 30 kids in 2009, the number of kids sponsored by the hotel increased to 35 in 2012 and added 5 more for a total of 40 kids enrolled for the school year 2013-2014. The kids are ranging from 3-5 years old.
The aim is to combat poverty by providing them with primary education to prepare them for the next level. The hotel not only sponsors the day care but colleagues are also encouraged to engage and participate in the annually prepared activities, which includes Maytubig kids’ recognition day (March), day care refurbishment (May/June), school supplies giving (June), nutrition month parade (July), Educational Field Trip (September), Trick or Treat (November), Christmas Party (December) and so on.
Aside from the Maytubig Daycare Center, the hotel also assimilated another project for Barangay Maytubig under the Embrace program, to support the Out-of-School Youths (OSY) by providing them an avenue to education, giving them work experience and an opportunity to work in Traders Hotel, Manila or other Shangri-La properties.
With the help of the Barangay Captain, Teresita Biscocho and her team, the hotel were privileged to have 8 candidates for the first batch of Out-of-School Youths. After screening through examinations, interviews, and home visits the candidates have trimmed down to 2. Came graduation from the program, one of the 2 chosen candidates was given the chance to work in the hotel as part of the culinary team up until the present.
The program is composed of an institutional learning in TESDA accredited center and then will follow series of on the job training in the hotel. Other skills like computer knowledge, personality development will also be worked on. Colleagues, managers and others will also play a big part as mentors throughout the program.
Once they have graduated from the 1 year program, the OSYs will be given the chance to apply in case there is a job opportunity in the hotel. The hotel will also be endorsing their papers to our manpower Agency partners and also our sister hotels in the Philippines for possible employment.
