Surabaya, 16 April 2018 – Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, Asia Pacific’s leading luxury hotel group, announces the appointment of Kamal Silva as the new Executive Chef at Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, effective 3 April 2018. Kamal who joins the hotel from his home city of Vancouver, Canada is also no stranger to Shangri-La, having previously been working with Shangri-La in Singapore.

Chef Kamal brings with him more than 27 years of culinary expertise gained from working in various restaurants and luxury hotels worldwide, from the Sultanate of Oman to the United Arab Emirates and Canada.

Chef Kamal’s passion for food and cooking was ignited by his pastry chef brother. Originally from Sri Lanka, he went on to study culinary arts at Asia Lanka Education School, where he developed his own style and flair. He began his culinary journey in 1991. As Executive Chef, Kamal is tasked to oversee the hotel’s seven restaurants and bars, as well as in-room dining and banquet operations, ranging from intimate gatherings and weddings to corporate celebrations.

An advocate for simplicity, Chef Kamal said, “I believe in using fresh ingredients as their natural flavours will impress the palate through careful balance and preparation, not to mention working with a group of young, dynamic and motivated chefs, will be able to create some amazing culinary experiences at the Shangri-La Surabaya.

“I am delighted to welcome Chef Kamal back to the Shangri-La family. He brings with him a great depth of experiences and skill,” said Jonathan Reynolds, the hotel’s General Manager. “I believe his passion for food will support the hotel’s aim of offering diverse dining in East Java.”
