COAST TO COAST, A SHANGRI-LA COLLABORATION FOR LOCAL COMMUNITY

Surabaya, 9 December 2019 – Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya; Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta and Shangri-La Jakarta Residences are proud to collaborate on the inauguration of the community-based programme “Coast to Coast”. The programme was held from 5 to 8 December 2019 and involved employees of Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta and Shangri-La Jakarta Residences carrying out social missions for the local community. On 4 December 2019, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya held an opening ceremony by planting baby mangrove trees in Konservasi Mangrove Trunojoyo in Wonorejo, Surabaya.

The team from Jakarta cycled the 366 kilometres from Jakarta to Pekalongan, a four-day trip taking them via Pamanukan and the Cirebon route, while the team from Surabaya took the 395.6 km route through Cepu and Semarang, with both cycling teams eventually meeting in the middle, in the City of Pekalongan.

Along the route, teams from Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta and Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya visited several schools. The Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya team visited SDN 1 Baureno Bojonegoro, SDN 3 Mijen Demak, SDN Sidorejo 1 Batang, and SD Baitussalam 2 Pekalongan. During their visits to the respective schools, the Shangri-La Hotel Surabaya team educated students and raised awareness about the dangers of single-use plastic bags and other plastic products. The educational material was created by Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya, and supported by Komunitas Nol Sampah (Zero Waste Community), and has been adjusted to the necessary age-level of the students. After the presentation, a knowledge-based competition and an interactive snakes and ladders game was held to test the students on their understanding of the topic. A student from each school with the highest score won a bicycle from Polygon.

Over and above the educational activity, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya also provided water tumblers and lunch boxes for participating students, as well as a water dispenser, plus 10 gallons of water to be utilised in the classroom for each school, all supplied by Danone Aqua.

“We believe that this educational activity will be of real value to the children and provide concrete examples of how to reduce plastic waste in everyday life. By providing educational materials that are applicable and easy to understand, as well as supporting them with functional items so that they can apply what they have learnt, we hope that positive change will be achieved” said Cahya Bhinartika, Service Manager – Corporate Social Responsibility, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya.

On the last day of the event, 8 December 2019, both teams from Surabaya and Jakarta took part in a closing activity by planting mangroves in Pekalongan Mangrove Park.

“Besides commemorating International Volunteer Day on 5 December 2019, we are confident that this activity will contribute to the plastic awareness conversation within Indonesia. Preserving the mangrove ecosystem, and encouraging Shangri-La employees and suppliers to be a catalyst for meaningful change to the local community are positive outcomes we are proud to support” said Jonathan Reynolds, General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya.
