Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai presents the Sounds of Hawaii

On 8 December 2012, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai presents the “Sounds of Hawaii” featuring Grammy award-winning musicians and performers.  The festive evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by a gourmet three course Hawaiian fusion gala dinner and grand performances by the musical troupe, which is flying in especially for the occasion.  The evening will finish with jazz, cocktails and dessert.

The musical troupe at the event includes Jeff Peterson (guitar), Kawane Mechler (hula), Jasmine Chen (Chinese jazz singer), Pomaika Klein (hula), David Chiorini (jazz bassist) and Chino Montero (slack guitar).

Musician Details 

Jeff Peterson (Guitar)
The young Jeff Peterson was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father, a Hawaiian cowboy.  He had the honour of giving special performances for former U.S. President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hilary, who is now the U.S. Secretary of State.  He achieved a milestone in Hawaiian music at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards on 13 February 2005, when a recording featuring Mr. Peterson and other island artists, Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, won the first-ever Grammy Award for best Hawaiian recording.

Mr. Peterson’s family has a very special history in China.  His great grandfather, William J. Boone MD, helped establish the first Western-style medical school in China, and Dr. Boone’s son, Henry William Boone MD, created the first Western hospital in China in 1880.

Kawena Mechler (Hula)
A recognised name in the Hawaiian performance arena, Ms Mechler is a seasoned performer in the Merrie Monarch Hula Competition – the most prestigious hula showcase.  A disciple of the famous Kumu (Master) Hula Ellen Castillo since she was 11 years old, she has undergone “uniki” (graduation) and now passes on her skills through hula classes internationally.  She also has a license to perform hula at traditional Hawaiian ceremonies – an opportunity held in high regard.

In addition to dancing, Ms Mechler is an acclaimed singer and songwriter.  Her first extended play recording, Salty Kisses, was nominated for two Na Hökü Hanohano Awards – “Extended Play Album of the Year” and the “Most Promising Artist.”  Beyond being a performing artist, Ms Mechler is also known for being a serial entrepreneur.  She is the founder of both Kahiapo Talent, a talent management agency, and HulaBaby Hawaii, an international accessories line.

Jasmine Chen (Chinese Jazz singer)
Jasmine Chen represents a rare sophistication and poise in the world of glitterati.  As singer, songwriter and producer, she is known for reinterpreting Chinese folk songs in a jazz style.  Featured in the Guardian in March 2009, her voice has been described as “soft and sensuous.”  She performs at several of Shanghai’s contemporary jazz venues such as the JZ Club and the House of Blues and Jazz, she also often renders classical performances at the Shanghai Oriental Art Centre, the Shanghai Concert Hall and the Hangzhou Grand Theatre.

Born into a family of professional folk dancers and actors, Ms Chen received classical training from the age of four and later graduated from the prestigious Leeds College of Music in England.  Ms Chen is paving the way for a new generation of Chinese musicians on the international jazz scene.

Pomaika Klein (Hula)
Ms Klein is a professional dancer for dance companies Tihati Productions, Ala Moana Hula Show, Kahiapo Talent and Hokuaulani Productions.  She is a disciple of the famous Kumu Hula Ellen Castillo and is proficient in both the Kahiko and Auana styles of hula.  She also practices Tahitian and Maori dances.

Ms Klein’s beauty won her the Miss Hawaiian Islands 2010 pageant.  She went on to represent Hawaii in the Miss South Pacific beauty pageant, where she emerged overall fifth.  This year, she won the title of Lei Queen in Honolulu.

David Chiorini (Jazz Bassist)
Born in San Francisco, the United States, Mr. Chiorini has joined various jazz ensembles to bring music to the likes of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the AIMS Festival in Graz, and the Chicago Funk and Groove Festival, amongst many others.  He was also a member of the Honolulu Symphony, where he served as musical director of the “Stars in Concert Hawaii.”  He is an active member of the local jazz and pop scene.

Chino Montero (Slack Guitar)
David “Chino” Montero is recognised as one of Hawaii’s most talented guitarists and falsetto vocalists.  He has performed and recorded with many of Hawaii’s top artists and was a founding member of the popular trio Palolo.  His music featured on three Grammy nominated record¬ings in 2006, 2008 and 2009.  He has toured in China, Japan, Brazil, Tahiti and across the United States.

Highlights include the opening for Carlos Santana in Germany, the House of Blues in Chicago and Dallas, the Schermerhorn Symphony Centre with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China.
