On 23 May, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao and Qingdao Red Cross Society launched the 2013 Blue Collar Assistance Project in a ceremony at Qingdao Hotel Management College.
Blue Collar Assistance Project is a charity project of Qingdao Red Cross designed to support and fund the development of vocational and technical education. With the development of the economy, the demand for skilled workers and personnel has grown significantly. There are about 160,000 vacancies for blue collar talents in Qingdao. The lack of teachers and investment shortage badly slowed the development of vocational and technical education. The blue collar workers need the society's care and support, they need a future.
Over the years, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao has been seeking the most effective way to give back to society by driving its corporate social responsibility. To resolve the shortage of professional technicians, and increase the growing social need in Qingdao, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao set up the Embrace project and partnered with Qingdao Red Cross Society in 2010. The hotel has provided financial support and internship opportunities at the hotel to selected vocational college students from low-income families. To date, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao has contributed Rmb400,000 to support 160 students and provided internship to 15 students. Seven trainees have completed an internship at the Engineering Department and have been employed as permanent staff.
Henry Lee, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao, donated Rmb100, 000 to Qingdao Red Cross Society on behalf of the hotel, and issued tuition fee to 50 students at Qingdao Hotel Management College.
“Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao strives to be a hotel comprising a team of dedicated colleagues that is unique and continuously makes effort to contribute to its surrounding communities,” Lee said. “This is why we are proud to enter into collaboration with Qingdao Red Cross Society to donate and help the Blue Collar Assistance Project. We see it as part of our responsibility to care for and support charities for those in need, just as we would care for our own families.”
“Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao’s participation in the project, to a certain extent, increased the investment and influence of vocational and technical education, and is bound to promote the development of blue collar talent education,” said Mr. Ding Gang, vice chairman of Qingdao Red Cross of Society, who gave the hotel a high evaluation.
